We understand that losing an animal can be very scary and stressful. Please don’t wait to start looking for your pet.The Lakeland Humane Society has a program to help you if you have lost a pet. www.petlynx.net is an online 24 hour service that lists lost and found pets so you can access this service at any time of the day. There are a couple ways that you can search for your lost pet on www.petlynx.net

1.      You can do found pet searched which would require repeat visits to see if anyone has found your pet.

2.      Or you can register your pet which will allow you to advertise your lost pet and will email you automatically whenever a pet matching your pets description is entered into the site.

Another site for posting lost animals is http://www.petfinder.com/classifieds/classifiedhop.html   If you don’t have internet access please ask a friend to post it for you or visit our animal care centre daily to see if your animal has been brought to us.

Owner Surrender  and Claims

We are open for owner surrender and claims (not for viewing or adoptions) 7 days a week: Monday  thru Sunday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm,  and Holidays 8:30 am to 11:30 am. Closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day.  If we are at a full capacity, we will not be able to accept  the surrender of your pet until a space opens up. We ask that if you plan to bring in an animal that you please call us first to make arrangements 594-1896.   If you are considering surrendering your animal to us please make sure that you have done everything possible to rectify the situation. For example; if the dog is not well behaved try obedience training. This can help fix all kinds of problems. We also ask that you have your pet up-to-date on any vaccination to help prevent disease.   Some options for trying to find a home for your pet without bringing it into the adoption centre are:

·        Posters on local bulletin board including the local vet clinic

·        Advertisements in the local newspapers

·        Online advertisement sites such as http://www.petfinder.com/classifieds/classifiedhop.html

Word of mouth, tell everyone you know

If you have made up your mind about surrendering your animal to us call us before bringing your animal in. This will allow us to set us accommodations for your animal as we are normally quite full of animals. The surrender process takes about half an hour and please make sure to bring any paper work you may have on the animal; such as veterinary papers, obedience certificates, etc. Please leave your animal in the vehicle until the necessary paper work is complete. There is a surrender fee to relinquish an animal to the Lakeland Humane Society. This will help pay for wages to care for the animal, food, medical expenses, and any other expenses incurred while caring for this animal. It is always easier for the animal if you bring something familiar for the animal like a bed or toys to help them feel a bit more secure. When you surrender your animal you are signing over all rights to this animal; this animal then becomes property of the Lakeland Humane Society. The Lakeland Humane Society will make every effort to find your pet a suitable new home, but we cannot guarantee that placement will be made. We cannot inform you of the outcome. As well if you change your mind after surrendering the pet you would then have to go through the same adoption processes as everyone else (including adoption fees) and we have the right to refuse you. The only way you would be able to prove that you should have the animal back is if you could show that the situation that caused you to surrender the pet has changed.

Surrender Fees:

$100.00 FOR EACH FOR A DOG OR CAT
$125.00 EACH FOR ONE LITTER UNDER THE AGE OF 4 MONTHS OR FOR ONE PREGNANT CAT/DOG

Why does the Lakeland Humane Society charge a surrender fee when someone
needs to give up their pet(s)?

Surrender fees only covers a small portion of what it costs to care for each animal that stays at our facility. The cost to care for animals adds up very quickly with such items as:

Feeding
Cleaning
Vaccinations
Deworming
Medical Attention (when needed)
Wages to provide care for the animal (7 days a week, 565 days a year; there are no holidays)
Time, effort, and cost put into promoting animals to find them a home
Maintenance of records for each animal
Insurance, utilities, and maintenance of building that provides shelter
Gas, insurance, and maintenance on the vehicle used to transport each animal
to veterinarians or events

Please remember we try our absolute best to find all of our adoptable animals new loving homes. This means that that there are times when the animal might be with us for months or longer in some cases.
